We all know how difficult it can get to eat right as the holiday season approaches, so it’s a good time to talk about this now. Proper nutrition doesn’t just affect how you feel on the inside, it also affects how you look on the outside. And who doesn’t want to look their best at holiday functions? Well, your hair is a big part of your overall look. Many people say it’s one of the first things they notice after your eyes.

One of the best ways to maintain hair health is by eating a healthy, balanced diet. Your hair needs a well-rounded diet that provides the necessary vitamins and nutrients to be healthy, just as the rest of your body needs to remain healthy. From my 20-plus years as a hair loss professional, I’ve seen how hair loss can be a sign of nutritional insufficiency for many clients.

Heredity is the most common cause of hair loss. Other causes include: hormonal changes, cancer treatments, illnesses, diseases, medications, poor hair care, eating disorders, and yes, a poor diet.

We all know how popular crash diets and fad diets are. Americans are also obsessed with fast and processed foods. All of this can impact your hair health too, which is not something most people think about.

You need enough calories, vitamins, and nutrients in your body to support hair growth. If you’re not getting them, your body might not be able to support the hair growth you want. Hair can grow back once deficiencies are corrected, but it takes some time.

Trichological treatments can be a big help in returning the scalp and hair back to to its healthiest form after deficiencies have been corrected. They can help return the scalp to its proper PH, hydration, and sebum levels. By treating the scalp, it is getting to the root of the problem and providing the healthiest possible environment to encourage hair growth. The lengths of the hair can also be treated to infuse more moisture and protein into hair that has been left dry and lifeless from previous deficiencies.

Below is the trichology line I’m currently recommending to my clients.

Another option to help restore deficiencies is the Havogen 5 patch from the CR Lab line. It’s a transdermal patch that is worn for 12 hours a day. It has a time-released formula of active ingredients. It’s inconspicuous, so not noticeable when worn. It can be placed behind the ear, or back of your neck, close to the hairline. It’s a patented hair loss prevention patch. It fights hair loss with saw palmetto, avocado extract, B complex vitamins, and antioxidants. It nourishes and strengthens the hair as well as balances moisture in both. It also works well to control oily scalp conditions.

When it comes to taking vitamins, nutrients, and supplements for hair health, it’s important to talk to your doctor about your own personal levels and needs. Your doctor can determine if there are deficiencies and if additional vitamin supplementation is needed.

A few options you and your doctor may consider are:

Protein

The hair is composed mostly of protein(keratin). A lack of protein in a diet can slow hair growth.

Biotin

Helps to strengthen the hair shaft, increases hair elasticity, and enhances hair growth.

Omega 3 fatty acids

Provides nutrients and protein for the hair follicles, supports healthy hair growth while adding shine and luster to hair.

Iodine and Selenium

Can aid in proper functioning of hormones and healthy hair growth

Vitamin A

Can help to produce healthy sebum, which can keep the hair from becoming dry and brittle, reducing breakage.

Vitamin E

Boosts blood circulation in the body, especially important for the scalp. It can enable cells to get more oxygen, which produces more energy to allow improvement in hair growth.

Vitamin C

Important for the immune system, also hair and skin. Produces collagen in the skin and regenerates cells.

There are also several foods containing vitamins and nutrients that can stimulate healthy hair growth. Here are a some examples:

Fruits

This is nature’s source for vitamins A,C, and E.

Eggs

A great source of protein, iron, and selenium.

Nuts/Seeds

Several nutrients can come from nuts and seeds depending on the type. For example, Brazil nuts are a good source of selenium.

Lean meats

Red meat, chicken, and turkey are great source of protein and iron.

Beans

Contain protein and biotin. Some beans such as kidney, pinto, and garbanzo are also good sources of vitamin E.

Dark green, leafy vegetables

A great source of vitamins A and C.

Fish

Salmon, tuna, halibut, and herring are a good source of protein, Omega3 fatty acids, vitamin B and iron.

Milk/Dairy

An excellent source of vitamin D and biotin.

Olive oil

A good source of vitamin E.

It’s important to emphasize that you cannot replace a poor diet with supplements alone. Eating a healthy, well balanced diet is your best choice to encourage healthy hair growth. If you think of your health holistically, your hair will benefit too. Here’s to a happy and health upcoming holiday season! I’m sure you’ll look great!
