Modern Non-surgical Hair Loss Options For Men

Hair loss can take its toll on both men and women. Throughout my 20-plus years working in the hair loss industry, I’ve seen it affect people’s self -esteem and change their level of social activity. In my experience, the emotional impact and lifestyle changes happen to men and women equally, despite what many may think.

I often hear people say it’s more acceptable in society for men to be bald or that a man can simply shave his head. While both of those statements can be true, it may not be the option or answer the man dealing with the hair loss wants for himself. It’s all about choice.

At my center Transitions Hair Solutions, we help a lot of men regain their self -esteem, physical activities, and social life. They want to feel like themselves again and live life without compromise. Many also don’t want to undergo hair loss surgery.
Luckily, the hair loss industry has made some great gains.

Take 36-year-old body builder Erick Laurino for example. Erick came to me looking for options for his thinning hair. He’s someone who works out daily and is incredibly physically active. He wanted something to boost his confidence that would withstand all his tough workouts. You can watch Erick’s full story here:

Erick opted for the CNC hair and scalp prosthesis from Cesare Ragazzi Laboratories. It’s a custom hair and scalp prosthetic produced by utilizing 3D printing technology and scalp mapping. Precise measurements and moldings are taken of the client’s area of hair loss or thinning. The exact scalp color, hair color, and texture are matched. Hair growth pattern and hair line are also designed. All specifications are sent to Cesare Ragazzi Laboratories in Italy, where the 39 stage process begins. Only non-processed, natural human hair is hand-injected into a medical grade, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and heat-passable base. It can be worn as permanent attachment with a dermatology-tested medical adhesive. After receiving a CNC, clients visit a licensed center like mine about once a month for maintenance, just as you would for a regular haircut. The CNC allows the client to swim, shower, exercise daily, and live just as they would with their own natural hair. The CNC is great for those with varying degrees of hair loss, whether you’re thinning like Erick, or are completely bald.

The great thing about the CNC is men can still achieve a variety of great hairstyles with it. One of the key differences between addressing men’s and women’s hair loss needs is the hairline. Men tend to have very distinct hairlines. Signs of male pattern thinning or baldness are a receding hair line and thinning in the crown. Whereas, with female pattern thinning or baldness, women tend to keep the hairline outline but diffuse loss occurs throughout. The result is two very different shaped hairlines to consider when designing a CNC or any other hair replacement system for that matter.

However, men experience different stages and types of hair loss. There is not a one size fits all solution. Men who still have hair on their crown may want to consider trichological treatments. Trichology is the study of the scalp and hair. The treatments are great for someone experiencing minimal to moderate hair loss. A Tricotest is performed first by measuring hydration, oil, and PH levels in the scalp. We also use a micro camera to get an in- depth look at the scalp condition. With these results, we can recommend a treatment protocol for each client’s individual hair loss and scalp issue. The treatment will result in the best possible environment for healthy hair to grow by getting to the root of the problem.

Low level light therapy is another option to help retain the hair the client already has by thickening existing hair and expediting its growth. Treatments can be performed in a center like mine or they can also be done at home. These treatments can also be used in conjunction with the trichological treatments for optimal results.

There’s also topical Minoxidil, which is a topical drug to help slow or stop hair loss. In some cases, it could stimulate growth. It is best to begin this type of treatment in the beginning stages of hair loss or when a client first notices hair loss. It is a drug and comes in different strengths for different hair loss situations. In my opinion, it is best to speak to your doctor first before beginning this type of treatment.

Custom human hair or high heat synthetic hair replacement systems are also an option. A mold or measurements are taken of the clients thinning or bald area. Design, hair type and base materials are chosen dependent on the client’s lifestyle, attachment choice and overall hairstyle.

All and all there are lots of options, if surgery isn’t your thing. Just make sure you’re consulting a reputable hair loss professional who can find the right solution for you. There’s no reason to be embarrassed. By age 50, approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair according to the American Hair Loss Association. Technology has also significantly changed the game. The days of toupees your father or grandfather may have worn are over.
